Question:
What is the big deal behind firefox?
2009-02-08 20:39:28 UTC
I have used 4 out of the 5 major web browsers. I used Opera, Firefox, IE7, and Google Chrome. I just don't understand what the big deal is behidn firefox. IE7 on Windows XP runs much faster than Firefox, and its easier to diagnose wireless connections in IE7. When run from a sandbox program (like sandboxie) it is much more secure and is pretty much everything you need. People say that Firefox "pioneered" tabbed browsing..not so. Opera was the first web browser to implement tabbed browsing and has been quicker at plugging all of their security holes. Firefox is a good browser but I just don't understand the hype behind it? I also think that firefox is going to be really lousy in a few years because its going to be as heavily attacked as IE. Please explain you firefox lovers why it is you like it?

I don't know how to explain it. I think I just like the interface.

I've tried Opera, Chrome, Safari, Internet Explorer, Kazehakase, Galeon, Epiphany, Dillo, Camino, and Lynx.

Even though Opera and Chrome and the fastest, I still prefer Firefox, regardless of whether I'm using Windows, Mac, or Ubuntu.

As for security, you can't get much better than Firefox with the NoScript extension. Of course, most people will probably find NoScript too much of an inconvenience, they'll visit fishy (or phishy) websites and click on anything, so I agree wtih your assessment about security threats growing as Firefox gains marketshare.

Ultimately, marketshare brings security threats because it brings more stupid users who can be tricked into installing anything.

For myself, I have used everything but opera, and firefox is the best tailord to my needs. It also runs 10xs faster then IE has ever ran for me, and deleting cookies and whatnot is easier. I do that once a day or more, and can do it in 5 seconds time. Also, the underlined misspelling is nice, lol. I have a lot of typos.

Google chrome for me, I just hated the set-up. It was nice though, being able to type in the browser a key word and have the drop down suggestions.

Hi tom, I've had tabbed browsing with the Macintosh's Safari web browser, and just recently took the plunge in using tabs. I've been slowly enjoying this feature. Instead of having a bunch of separate layers of windows up on the screen, I'm starting to appreciate the easy of just clicking on a different tab. Another thing I like doing is for those slow loading web pages. You can click on one tab, go to a web site, start another tab, and go to a different web site, and go back to the first web site, and read, while the second is still loading. It takes some time to get used to it, but you might start to enjoy doing it this way as I have started to. Best of luck. --Rick

Fox is the most popular of the "other" browsers. It is very customizable and no Microsoft hoops to jump through for downloads and upgrades.

The appeal is mostly for the theme adaptability, you can make it your own. And as you stated, fewer attacks. Due to it being less popular or just because its not from Uncle Bill ?

It"s sort of a cult following...Kind of like the people who will only use a Mac (cult of Mac)
