Question:
Is it safe to use tor browser and firefox at the same time?
2013-01-31 07:20:57 UTC
Does using firefox at the same time as tor browser undermine tor's security in any way? I usually have both open and use firefox for things that rewire more bandwidth because tor is so slow.

I realize firefox is not secure like tor, but does using it affect tor in any way?

It is safe in that it will not cause any conflicts among browsers(including Firefox) but it is NOT safe if you are trying to remain anonymous. Tor, warns users on its homepage that running certain flash applications while connected to Tor will defeat the purpose as your IP will be revealed by the application. Likewise, if you open and run certain programs while connected to Tor your IP address is compromised. Read the excerpt below:

"Tor does not protect all of your computer's Internet traffic when you run it. Tor only protects your applications that are properly configured to send their Internet traffic through Tor. To avoid problems with Tor configuration, we strongly recommend you use the Tor Browser Bundle. It is pre-configured to protect your privacy and anonymity on the web as long as you're browsing with the Tor Browser itself. Almost any other web browser configuration is likely to be unsafe to use with Tor...

The Tor Browser will warn you before automatically opening documents that are handled by external applications. DO NOT IGNORE THIS WARNING. You should be very careful when downloading documents via Tor (especially DOC and PDF files) as these documents can contain Internet resources that will be downloaded outside of Tor by the application that opens them. This will reveal your non-Tor IP address. If you must work with DOC and/or PDF files, .."

So even though Firefox is not connected through Tor--it would still transmit your IP if certain files are open. I suggest occasionally using a Free Proxy in addition to Tor, if you need speed while browsing.

Mate, depends, if you are linked to the school's internet. If you're related to the university's web, then of path given that you're gaining a connection from from the institution, of direction they are able to see what you're doing, by way of wirelessly remote packages.
