I applied for a fan site on Fan Fusion and got accepted, and it asked the following:

We can host a sub domain at this time. If you are interested let us know and what URL (user name.fanfusion.org) you would like. You may wish to consider purchasing your own domain name from godaddy.com

Please do not request a subdomain however, unless you are serious about using it.
