NEW INFORMATION ADDED

Make sure the Internet is still working on the downstairs computer. If not reboot the Cable/DSL modem. If you can get on the Internet downstairs then.

Determine if you are using a wire or wireless connection upstairs.

Wireless

1.. Click on View Available Wireless Networks and do a refresh and make sure that the computer can see YOUR router. If it cannot see your connection make sure the wireless is enabled in your computer.

2. Disable then re-enable the wireless connection.

3. Then do the repair option on your connection.

Wired

1. Unplug and replug in the Ethernet cable. On the router make sure the port light for your connection is on. You may want to move it to another port on the router. See if you are getting a link light where the cable is plugged into the computer.

2. On the local area connection disable the connection then re-enable it.

3. Do a repair on the connection.

These steps will usually get you back on the Internet.

Until you get rid of the limited or no connectivity you will not get on the Internet.

OK Thank you for the added information

1. Insure that your computer is set to obtain an IP address automatically. Go to Start> connect to> show all connections

RIGHT click on the mouse with it over the wireless connection icon. and left click on properties. a local area connection box should open. Double click on Internet Protocal TCP/IP in the

this connection uses the following box. Make sure there is a radio dot in the Obtain an IP address automatically box and a dot in the Obtain DNS server address automatically.

2.Then click on the Advanced tab

Insure the IP address is DHCP enabled.

3. ARE you using a WEP key that needs to be added in the wireless settings. If you are retype in the key.

4 . Do a repair of the connection.

If you still can't get on and it is a laptop. I would take the computer to a WIifi hot spot (probably a local library) and see if it will connect there. If it will then you have a configuration problem between your computer and your router. If it will not then if is probably a bad wireless card or bad built in wireless card. Take it to a computer repair facility or call the computer manufacture.

Some more info about the rest of your setup would help. You've told all about your upstairs computer, so what's downstairs? Another computer and a wireless access point? Is the downstairs computer having any connection problems? Is the upstairs machine brand new or did you just now put it upstairs?

I have an idea what's up, but more information would help. I'll check back later and add to my answer.

EDIT: Thanks for the added info. From the signal strength you say you're getting upstairs, it could be that something in the house is masking the wireless signal so badly that it can't connect.

Possible stuff to try ... assuming the upstairs computer is a laptop ... and these will help to narrow down what the problem might be ..

1) Take it downstairs into the same room with the wireless router and see if it connects. If it does, then the issue is that something in your house is REALLY messing up the wireless signal.

2) Take the machine to a place that has a public access wireless hotspot (like a Starbucks). If it connects there but doesn't at home (not even in the same room with the wireless), then there's a problem with the wireless router. (Especially if your downstairs computer connects with a cable.)

I know it seems kind of weird that the wireless won't even go upstairs ... we have one in the office and it's really weird where it'll connect and where it won't (we're in a big warehouse/garage-style building). Anyway, hope that helps a little.

EDIT #2: Looking at your question again after a couple of days, it seems like your wireless signal just isn't making it upstairs. By all means, if you have access to tech support, give them a call and work through the problem with them, but I think you may just end up having to run the upstairs computer off of a cabled connection. I know that's not what you're trying to accomplish, but you may end up just getting stuck with that. Sorry!

The Local Area Connection, cable unplugged is referring to the network cable connection, which you are not using.

I've had this problem before and a good reboot of the wireless router usually fixes it.

Basically, unplug the router for about 5 seconds and then plug it back in.

To the guy above, that would be a GREAT idea IF her internet were working!

Hi,

Have any one played around with your router setting, go to the computer with the router on a lan connection and type in 192.186.0.1 in your I.E window address bar, this should take you into your router setup pages, check if someone has set a WEP or blocked you (MAC address). you can reset your router back to Factory setting (NO protection) there a small hole in the back, just push a paper clip into it.

hello loose *****, allow's syart with pulling your modem to wherein you'll be able to unplug it from the again simply unplug and wait approximately thirty seconds then plug it again in now reboot your pc whilst you see your home windows emblem begin tapping f8 scrol all the way down to final well configuration(increase) now take a look at it once more and notice if you're in a position to get on-line then if no longer than cross to manage panel then hit the application&points or you probably have home windows vista or home windows xp than we all know what the trouble relatively is near this again for your computing device and position your tuneup diskett to your dvd burner and there you are going to see ethernet and usb chipset then it's going to ask you to reboot whilst you get again for your computing device than take a look at it. it must be on-line but when this isn't the trouble then name your web supplier and ask for the tech help, they'll gladly and with politeness aid you to get on-line if they do not then time to visit a dsl broadband connection. well success desire i used to be useful to you
