Ok, assuming I know nothing... I just downloaded a web server, WHAT IN THE WORLD IS A WEB SERVER?! Please help

So, what is a web server? What can you do with one? Will it mess up my computer?

A web server application will allow you to host web pages and other files so other people can access your public files.



Most people use web servers to host web sites but any computer connected to the web with the correct software will also work.



Personally, I use web server software to test my websites before I 'go-live' so that the public do not see my mistakes.



I wouldn't use my PC as a web server because it would just slow down to an annoying level - all those people accessing your files will definitely have an effect on processing power.

A web server is a program you can run on a computer to display (serve) your own web pages. If you are interested in learning how to run a web server and offer your own web pages then have fun. It will not mess up your computer by itself, but it isn't to hard to mess up your computer if you have to make lots of adjustments to make the program run. If you are using Windows XP I highly recommend learning how to use the "System Restore" program BEFORE you start messing around. However if you just want your own web site there are many free or inexpensive services that are much easier than running a web server. I think Yahoo! even has one.

OK very slowly back away from your computer. Then delete the web server you downloaded. A web server is the back office for hosting a webSITE. It opens up alot of ports to the internet that can make you very vulnerable to attack if you have never dealt with internet services. If you are interested in learning about building websites, I would suggest a good Community college where building systems are done on isolated systems. TX
