IF SBC CANT HELP YOU, since the account is your girlfriends name.
Create the one you want through Yahoo, then forward the new address to all your contacts at the sbcglobal.net address,
Also update all business & internet contact links at their sites with your new email address, since they most likely wouldnt read your forwarded message.
If you want to save emails from your old box you may need to copy and paste them all into a program like Notepad or Word then click file send and send to your new address. There maybe an easier way to do this, ask in another question.

sbcglobal.net was your internet service correct? If so, you need to close your internet service with them, now you can open a yahoo.com mail account, but email sent to your old address will not auto forwad to your new email. sbcglobal.net is a service provider that is teamed up with yahoo. The 2 domains (yahoo.com/ sbcglobal.net) are seperate.
Which is why I always suggest to people to get a free yahoo email account, or google, or msn whatever, that way if you change internet service providers you never have to worry about giving out your email address all over again. I have had my yahoo.com email address for almot 10 years.

When I cancelled my sbcglobal account, it asked me if I wanted to change my account to @yahoo.com. I believe if you contact yahoo via e-mail, they would be able to walk you through exactly how to do it. I remember it being really simple, though, but don't remember the exact steps.

Peace.
