First of all, don't listen to the advice of ditching AOL or reinstalling it. At least not yet! I hate AOL just as much as the next guy, but your preference shouldn't matter to solving the problem.

Here, you are trying to get AOL to detect your cable modem, but it's not supposed to. You need to set the software so that it thinks you've already got an internet connection. By doing so, you are telling AOL not to worry about detecting a modem or to be in charge of the connection. It just has to know one is already there.

It's been a while since I've had to configure AOL to use the broadband connection (last when I was working on a family member's PC), but that's the setting you're looking for. With an AOL tech on the line, they should be able to walk you through the steps to make sure AOL is not trying to find a modem. Tell the tech that you don't want it to look for anything. Hopefully that helps...

If you have a cable modem you must have a broadband provider! Get rid ot that funky AOL! All its doing is slowing down your broadband anyway!!!!!! GET BRAVE and use the REAL internet with firefox or Internet Explorer! Man AOL sees the rubes comin!!!!!!!
