Any one computer can host multiple websites (each called a virtual host).

If the computer is set up to "watch" for these virtual hosts then when you type a domain name: example.com - it serves that site's content. When you type another domain: example2.com - it serves THAT site's content.

One domain can be set as the default virtual host, or the server owner can specify some content to serve that is not necessarily a hosted domain's content.

So, when you get the IP of a domain, and replace it with the IP in a browser - you can (quite frequently) get served something entirely different. Because one server is often used to host multiple domains on one IP address.

When you type a domain into your address bar, your machine query's a DNS server. This server finds a corresponding IP address to the submitted domain and returns it to your machine. Your machine then uses this IP address to contact the remote machine.

Now the IP address return is going to depend on what query you are making. If you do a lookup for site.com you may get a different result then if you were to do a look up for www.site.com, or mail.site.com.

Be sure your doing a look up for the same sub-domain as you intend. There may also be a issue of redirection or something along the lines.

It would be a benefit to future answerers to supply both the IP you are using and the domain your performing a look up on.
