Yes, they're called "discussion boards" or "forums" and can be found via Google. Conversations are generally organized as "threads," one per topic, with individual responses being called "posts" or "replies." When you make a post, everyone can see it and respond, and each additional post makes the thread "longer." If there's a topic you'd like to discuss that isn't covered by an existing thread, most boards will allow you to start a new thread. Some boards will require you be a a member for a certain length of time or to post a certain number of times before being able to start a thread, but most boards don't have that restriction.

Some forums try to cover everything. Some have a very narrow scope. Many are split up into "subforums" for the various subcategories of discussion. Most are free to join with a relatively simple sign-up process. Some allow you to post anonymously without signing up at all.

Try Gaia online? They've got multiple forums, and from my experience, a lot of people will talk about controversial subjects. Watch out for trolls and extremely rude people, though! Not only are their forums, but there's fun games to play. Check it out!
