Safety with ebay?

Hi

Can anyone give me some advice? I know many people who have got great bargains off ebay. I look for things on there fairly often and wish I had the guts to buy something...

So, how are purchases safe guarded? For example, if I order something and it never arrive, how can i get my £££s back?

On Amazon 3rd party, it's very simple, if you don't get your order, you inform the seller. If the seller isn't forthcoming you report it to amazon. £££s returned! No fuss, no muss!!

What's ebays policy in this situation?

If you pay using paypal this is also the case, you can get your money back. I always ask the seller for recorded delivery as this is also another safe guard and post office will reinburse you if a parcel goes missing, you can also track your parcel and make sure they have sent it, by going on the royal mail website. I know what you mean though, amazon do always find in favour of the buyer, because they take the money on your behalf so there's no arguing over whether a person has paid or not. Also the feedback only counts towards the seller and not the buyer. Ebay could actually learn a thing or 2 from Amazon

If you sign up for Paypal they cover purchases up to £500.

If for some reason the item you purchase is not as described, or faulty, and the seller won't refund the money then you can claim it back.

It doesn't happen instantly as Paypal have to first contact the seller and hear their side of the story.

If you use your credit card to make Paypal purchases then you get the added protection that your credit card offers also.

Never send cash or pay using one of the money exchanges.

ebaY is safe and can be great value, here are some tips

Make sure you ask any(all) questions you have about the item for sale before you bid.

If sellers avoid answering your questions, or don't address them exactly then forget it, there is a reason they are doing that.

Try and read between the lines as some sellers will be real sneaky about the way they word their descriptions.

Watch out for new, mainstream items sold quite a bit under the lowest High St value you can find on-line. It would be very difficult for most small businesses to buy in large enough quantities to warrant much cheaper prices. Be careful that they don't sting you with grossly over inflated postage and packing charges to make up the price difference.

If a seller claims to run a business and they are charging v.a.t. try cross referencing their postcode and address to see if it really is a genuine physical address.

Remember If it sounds way too good to be true, then it probably is.

Also worth mentioning is that ebaY customer service is appalling. If you have a complaint the only method of contact is by email and they usually take a while to reply. The only people that get to speak to actual employees are power sellers who get a direct line phone number.

Hope this helps
great one

ebays policy is weaker in some respects to amazons as ebay makes you wait longer for non delivery of items (think its 7 or 14 days)

but if you dont get any reply from the seller can report them to ebay, can also get a strike against the seller if the item does not arrive

always look at the sellers feedback

Hi Friend,

First, before rating the seller, you can communicate with the seller and inform him/her about your problem. Usually, most of the sellers respond to the queries of their customers and try to solve their problems at the earliest either by locating the article(s) purchased by them and send it to them or by refunding totally the money paid by them. You can rate the seller only after your query is solved completely. Remember, in ebay, once you rate a member, it cannot be changed or corrected but can be withdrawn mutually.

If you do not get any response from the seller or the seller fails or refuses to solve your query, you can communicate the ebay officials and get your money refunded.

However, it is advisible that you should first read all the terms and conditions, rules and regulations of the ebay as well as about the seller and the product description cautiously before entering into any deal.

Do not under ANY circumstances purchase a product[s] from ebay from a company or individual whose RATING is less than 95%. Also check the feedback and if you proceed make sure the seller[s] have a physical address which can be verified

similar on eBay as Amazon up to £500.

Look for the seller's reputation and maybe start off with buying something small and cheap to build your confidence up. I've yet to have a bad experience with eBay.

I buy and sell on ebay and use a Paypal account which gives you some security. Look at setting up a Paypal account, it's simple to do, then go for it!
