I recommend either Godaddy Economy or the Deluxe plan:

http://www.hosttell.com/godaddy/

(prices from $4.74/month - $6.99/month)

Price of a discounted domain with any hosting plan is $2.19

or Dreamhost http://www.dreamhost.com/hosting.html

Their standard price is $9.95/month ($119.40/year)

but you can use the promo code PLUS and get

$50 discount +2 Free domain names.

Disk space: Unlimited

Bandwidth: Unlimited

2 Free domain names

Unlimited domains and subdomains

Price: $5.78/month ($69.40/year)

Godaddy is really easy and cheap. I used them for a while just because you get good bang for the buck. If you are just starting, go with them.

I've since switched to DreamHost. They offer a ton of awesome perks, like subversion and email that is limited only by the storage in your account. They also offer SFTP, which is more secure for uploading while on a public network.

RIMU is good for Ruby programming.

LunarPages is meh. I've had them for a while and they did a terrible job migrating the server I have one website on.

FYI, I've done all open source programming using the Linux hosting options on the sites above.

Edit - I was working with Site5 and had a ton of problems. There email is very limited. Their servers are very slow. I do not recommend Site5 for ruby development.

Google Apps is a great email alternative. For DNS, use everydns.net-- it's free and works great!! (I've been using it for years)

You should avoid hosts that offer "unlimited" space/bandwidth as this is somewhat of a scam. You should also avoid hosts that offer ridiculous amounts of space/bandwidth, such as 10GB space for only $5/month. Hosts like this overload and oversell servers, and are bad news for anyone who wants reliability.

You should also avoid answers here that send you to review sites, as those sites make money off commissions and rank hosts based on how much money they'll get paid, not on how good they are. You should avoid answers here that look like they are affiliate links as well, for the same reason.

Hostamina.com is exactly what you need. Support is great! They will help you set up your website, and they will provide you with any help you need. Note that I am not using an affiliate link or sending you to a review site.

-They will help you with anything you need help with

-They will put you on a super fast server

-Every server has at least dual quad core processors

-Every server has at least 4GB of RAM

-Every server has strict account limitations

-Most companies average 300 accounts per server

-Hostamina averages 100 accounts per server

Godaddy.com is a mediocre choice, I have had quite a few problem with Godaddy many of which were just dificulties caused by the way they do things

Look at this comparison of top web hosts:

http://hosting.mestore.us

They all have cpanel which I recommend (and Godaddy doesn't have)and most have unlimited space and bandwidth

here you go http://www.avawebhosting.net/

to me that's the best hosting, I have 80 websites with them and they only cost me $8 a month.

And not even some dedicated web hosts can offer you 8 different IP addresses like they do.

I use this host and they are really great. $2.50/mo on their cheapest package, and if you use coupon DOMAIN at checkout, you get the domain free for a year, and only start paying a yearly domain rate after that.

Check out http://www.hosting-dealz.info

There is a coupon there for 1 cent hosting with hostgator, quite good if you ask me.

I've been using hostgator myself for quite awhile and it is extremely good for it's price.
