I've run an up-to-date virus scan - nothing. I've run anti-spy software - nothing. Please help! I haven't tried a restore point yet - I'd like to know the problem.

Your question is too generic.
Anyway.. I'll give it a try.. If you are using a POP3 account and you have checked the option in your mail application to leave the message on the server after retrieving (instead of deleting them), you could receive duplicates if you break the connection to the server before downloading all the mails.
Hope this helps..

Having one, two or more PCs with the same e-mail cient address may create this problem? Only one of the PC clients must be set to update the mail server upon complete download of your incoming mails. Check the settings.
For example Outlook Express, go to Tools, Accounts, Mail, Property, Advanced - uncheck 'leave a copy of messages on server'.
Hope this solves your problem.
