Here's some background. My computer is 5 years old and i have Windows XP. I had dial-up for 4 years on my computer. Then i switched to DSL and i started using the Internet Explorer icon to connect. When i double click on the icon, it takes 3 minutes and longer to get to my homepage of Yahoo. Why is this? Why does it take so long? Is there any way i can fix it?

Also, if i leave IE on for more than 10 minutes without using it, when i get back on the computer it is really slow and sometimes does the "Program not responding" error message. Doesn't DSL run in the background all the time keeping you contstantly connected to the internet? Why would it slow down because of inactivity? Is there a way i can fix this problem too?

I would really appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

Internet explorer uses more and more resources as time goes on so that after a while, things are very slow. Firefox is a better browser in this regard.

Your problems sound like you may have some spyware or viruses installed and you also haven't tuned and cleaned your system from garbage for a while.

first of all right click on ie explorer, then click on properties, and delete all file in the history.when u click on delete u will get a window and it will show an icon, delete all, click on that. this will delete all temporary internet files. dont worry, u will not loose any files etc which u have saved. if the ie still takes more time to open check how much ramu have on computer, it looks like you have 64 or 128 mb. get that changed to 1gb ram and your computer will work very fast.

When's the last time you did a clean up on your computer? Try emptying temp files, deleting programs you may no longer use, look up a site that gives you other ideas about how to clean your computer up, and improve it's performance.

To some extent Victoria is correct. Go to the internet options and remove all the cookies i.e. temporary internet files. Check the speed. Even then if it is slow, you need to add Rams. Since your CPU is 5 years old, then it may need reformatting.
