outlook express and thunderbird etc. what is pop3 and imap??

i was setting up an email account in thunderbird (email program)
and it asked me for my incoming server name and told me i can choose from pop3 and imap. im totally confused. is there a way to find out what the server name is?????

IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol. It is a method of accessing electronic mail or bulletin board messages that are kept on a (possibly shared) mail server. In other words, it permits a "client" email program to access remote message stores as if they were local. For example, email stored on an IMAP server can be manipulated from a desktop computer at home, a workstation at the office, and a notebook computer while traveling, without the need to transfer messages or files back and forth between these computers.





POP (Post Office Protocol) is used to provide simple remote access to mailboxes. POP3 is the latest version of POP. With POP3, once mail clients connect and download their messages, the messages are typically removed from the server and stored on the client's local machine.



to find the server... if it is from a webmail think, it should give you the server in your prefrences, or atleast on most. if not you can allways email the host people.

Most of the Outlook Express error messages are due to problems with the internet connection, not the software on your computer.

i'm also attempting to make sure my yahoo account through outlook. I purely tried the NZ info given in this answer. It would not artwork for me. It famous both the outgoing and incoming servers, sends a attempt mail ok, yet won't be able to log into the server. A field pops up 'enter community Password' and when I enter my consumer call (finished yahoo digital mail address) and password, it nonetheless would not artwork. If everybody else can shed any uncomplicated i'd be fairly grateful.
