Ok, I'm an old geek and need some help. Take a company, any old company, like www.cheerios.com, and they have a whole pot full of web pages. Where are those stored, and how does a programmer who is authorized to change them get to them? See? Told ya it was dumb.

They are on a computer connected to the Internet that is called a web server. It is running a program that "serves up" these pages when you click on a link. The companies that provide these computers are "web hosting" companies. The person authorized to change the pages usually uses a program to transfer new or updated pages, graphics, etc to that computer. They have a user name and password given to them by the web hosting company. Most web servers have hundreds if not thousands of domains (like cheerios.com) on them.

Hope that helps you understand a little better.

Web pages are stored on Web servers. The servers are computers that are connected to the Internet, and have software designed for serving the pages. Most servers today do more than actually send (serve) web pages, many of them actually build them from programs (scripts) created by programmers, so that the page you see as a user is customized for you.

Most larger companys have their own web server machines within their company, and probably access them through their own internal networks. Smaller companies, organizations, and individuals who can't afford the hardware, or the connection will store their website (pages) on a public web host.

There are quite a few web hosts, some free (paid by advertising), some expensive. They all offer different levels of service based on either how much data, what kind of scripting engines do they offer, how much data can the website send out a month... etc...

Do a search on "Web Host" or ask here for people to give you recommendations. Or use this link from Wikipedia: http://www.wikiclassifieds.org/wiki/Web_hosting
