Windows Vista Home Premium shows connection to Internet, but does not allow me to connect?

Question

Internet Explorer is unable to connect by using domains or IP's MSN messenger connects fine and am able to ping websites with replies

This is not my own computer and am trying to figure this out for a friend and have brought it home and have the same problems with it here, my internet cannot be the problem as I and the rest of my family is connect fine

It was working fine and then just suddenly stopped

Any suggestions

So far I have tried Disabling Windows Firewall, Disabling QoS and IPv6, manually setting the IPv4 settings, and closing all process and services possible apart from the main windows ones with no results

If it came bundled with a firewall/anti-virus software then disable it all. My Vista PC came with McAfee and I got the same problem. I disabled it and everything was fine again. I could even re-enable McAfee after I got my connection back.

Check the settings in IE tools/internet options/security. Default all settings. There does appear to be a bug currently showing on a few machines which makes IE6 so slow it times out, deleting some files from the user's profile in Application Data, also /local settings/application data has seemed to fix this for the cases I have seen, but you need to be very careful which files you remove. You could try downloading and saving the firefox installer onto one of your other machines, then transfer it over the network to his machine and install it.

I have Vista Premium too! Does it show the liitle world beside the internet icon on the bottom left-handed corner?

If it does then it should be working.

If it shows a triangle warning sign that means thatlimited connectativity. (or what I say is that the internet is going in and out meaning you sometimes will get to a site)

if it shows a X then you need to right-click it and choose Connect To a Network.

if it shows nothing that means just about the same as it showing a triangle warning sign.

You have tried all the right things. Try also to download FireFox and see if that still works. If it does still work, then it is a registry problem with IE. Perform a system restore to a date when it was working fine. This should fix your registry settings.

I had a similar problem last week, and I followed the help and advice suggestions-even going as far as reflashing the BIOS, nothing worked. It turned out that my internal wifi connector had burnt itsself out, which is a common problem with HP notepads. Ii fixed it by spending £20 on an external aerial, it connected to the network instantly.

Vista is evil and hates itself. It wants to make you waste your time figuring out why it won't work with itself. You should suggest to your friend that they pay a bit extra to switch to XP.



Try Firefox? Oh, and if you have norton, switch to a different antivirus.

In Vista, Internet connections (wireless or otherwise) have to be 'Private' for them to work.
