if my download speed is 40 mbps why don't I download anything that fast?

My download speed is 40 mbps but when I download something it downloads at about 1% of that. Is it all a lie? If I calculate it properly I should download a 23 minute episode of something in 3 seconds as an episode of something is about 120 megebytes but it doesn't do that.

A. You're looking at the values wrong. The speed you listed is in Mbps (megabits per second). Web browsers and other programs display data transfer rates in MBps (or MB/s, megabytes per second). There are 8 bits in a byte.



B. The advertised speed is "up to" 40Mbps, not 40Mbps. You'll get close to it, but you won't always get 40.



C. Speed also depends on the server you're downloading from. You can only download as fast as the other end allows.

no. I use to have the same issue. When it says 40 mbps it usually Megabits per second. Your browser is probably messuring mbps which actualy there saying Megabytes per second. 1 Megabit = 0.125 megabytes, so it's going to be a lot slower. I would recommend getting a faster internet connection if possible...

Edit:Download speed also depends on the bandwidth available from the web site. Try another site and see if the d/l speed is better.

i think you only have 4 mbps I've never heard of 40mbps. I have 1.0 mbps and i only download at about 120kb/sec. if you had a 8mbps than you should be downloading at about 1,000 kb/sec. call your service provider and ask them the questions.
