Is it possible to run a wordpress blog using the downloadable wordpress software, but still use the free hosting and free domain?

You can host WordPress on some free hosts as others have already said.



However, free hosting is often a false economy for any number of reasons and with major names like Hostgator now offering shared hosting plans at a few dollars a month, it makes much more sense to build on a platform that isn't going to go belly up without notice, plaster ads on your site, place all kinds of restrictions on traffic, CPU usage, database queries etc etc. If you're just starting out you don't need an expensive hosting solution.



Depending on what your plans are you could consider WordPress.com - many restrictions but stable and reliable. I realize it may not be what you need but again, when you decide to host WP yourself you can move any existing content across quite easily.



I will add one word of extreme caution regarding another reply on this thread recommending a certain "free hosting service". Do not go near them - explanation in my resource box below. Read the huge number of comments to see why and also Google their name and you will find all manner of information.



To the poster of that link I would say this: as you are using an affiliate link you are assuming that this "company" will pay you for referrals - I believe it was $5 at the last count - it is a scam - you might like to check out the link too and hopefully you will stop spreading their honeypot to other unsuspecting internet users.

There are some free hosting service providers but they have multiple limitations.



I will suggest you to buy a custom domain and use the wordpress hosting. It will not cost you anything. Or if you have bigger plans with your website, you can go for self hosted wordpress, it will offer more options of customization.

Keep in mind too, you'll need to have access to a database to use WordPress since it is Database driven. You can always look into using WordPress.com as well. WordPress is a great tool for creating a dynamically driven blog or website. I use WordPress to build websites all the time.
