Hi! I have a W8901G TP-Link router and it's connected to an ADSL internet connection. I use it to connect my PC to the router using an ethernet cable, and also to connect my laptop to the router wirelessly (802.11 b\g). I've already chosen a WEP 64-bits key and applied it! These days, I notice that the transfer speed is too much slow on my pc, even when the laptop is not connected. How to ensure that no one is connecting internet via my router?

well, most routers have logging feature. It tells you what machine (ip address) goes to what site at what time. So access your router's admin page and have a look (read the router's manual), typically done by entering the router's IP address in a web-browser. If you see weird IP addresses in the log and (or) machines access the internet at a specific time that you know you don't go on the net at that time. Then most likely you've been piggybacked off.

To combat this, change the default SSID (your network name that appear in a list when a wireless device scans for available wi-fi) then stop broadcasting it. I won't be surprised if someone've indeed been stealing your bandwidth since WEP encrytion scheme is very flawed.A copy of Backtrack and couples of command lines can reveal your WEP key in matter of minutes. You can switch to WPA or WPA2 for better security if the router supports it

Using any stressed modem/routers will have to paintings with none concern, when you consider that whenever you set up it and fix the laptop your web connection will have to be up as good. It`s like having a stressed connection from an web offering organization. The modem/router you're going to get may have a LAN port and your laptop has one aswell. As quickly because the modem/router is configured for web entry simply plug the cable among the modem and laptop and in little while you're going to be gaining access to the web.

Hi,

mi... is quite right. WEP is so easily cracked. But then again so are the others albeit not as easy. Take aircrack_ng, ( LINUX ), or Cain & Abel etc. All these can crack the keys.

The best way is to connect to your router and set up the MAC address table access thus allowing ONLY those MAC address to access the router. Simple solution but very effective!

Regards.
