Question:
Firefox 3 and AVG Safe Search 8.0?
2008-06-20 06:03:42 UTC
Well, before the 'Download Day' of Mozilla's Firefox 3, AVG released their latest version 8.0. Now I believe with the previous 7.0 version it worked with FF2, but now in the Add-ons box it says 'AVG 8.0 Safe Search is not compatible with Firefox 3.0'.

So my question basically is...

How to fix this so Safe Search problem so it is compatible with the latest version of Firefox.

But also...

Whether it's the browser's or the Anti-virus software's compatibility fault?

Whether it is only this 'Safe Search' that isn't compatible and that Anti-virus still works regardless.

Is there any free Anti-virus software off CNET that is compatible with FF3?

Thanks. It'd be great if someone could address all points. I ain't to savvy with computers!

Firstly, this is not the entire AVG anti-virus system that's not working. With AVG 8.0, a firefox plug-in was added as new functionality. This plug-in scans web pages for known malware (i.e., javascript that can exploit known vulnerabilities to load virus, spyware, botware, etc.) or known phishing sites. It's only this piece that doesn't work with Firefox 3.0 (due to the API changes with the extension interface). I'm sure that AVG is working on an update to this as I type.

That said, Firefox 3.0 itself includes some new security features that perform similar functionality to the AVG safe search plug-in. If you take a look at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/features/#security, specifically the Anti-Malware feature pretty much mimics what the AVG plug-in does.

In summary, I don't think that there's any real need to switch your anti-virus for this reason, and given the new security features in FF 3.0, you're still as protected as before.

As for AVG Safe-Search, AVG havn't updated their feature to be compatible with FF3. Until they do I'm afraid you'll have to go without or look for a free replacement.
