Question:
Desktop internet shortcuts?
2006-08-16 05:34:52 UTC
I used to be able to create a desktop shortcut to a website by right clicking in the site and selecting "Create shortcut". This still works, but the shortcut provided, when selected, opens up another panel asking which programme do I want to use to open the shortcut (suggesting IE of course). Checking the "Always use this programme" box doesn't work. Clicking OK takes me to the site, but I want to miss out this step. Any ideas anyone?

Looks like you have problem with file association.

If you are using Win XP. Go to this website and download file association for htm/html and run it.

It should fix the problem.

Another reason for this problem could be that you are saving them without any extension. Normally if you have default settings you dont see extensions of files. If you have changed it to view file extensions then you need to be typing .htm or .html otherwise it wont associate with any program.

Check to see if file extensions set to view

open any folder and click on [tools] - [Folder Options] select [view] tab, and find [Hide extensions for known file types]

make sure its checked

I create my shortcuts a little bit differently and I haven't had any problems. I go the the website I want to create my shortcut to and copy the address by right clicking on the address and selecting copy. Then I right click on my desktop (after I have closed my web browser) and choose "New" then "Shortcut". Then paste the website address into the address bar. Click "Next", then name the shortcut and select "Finish".

I know this doesn't fix your problem, but it does make it go away.

This doesn't really answer your question, but I would suggest using your Favorites, instead. Click on Favorites (at the top of the window), then click Add to Favorites. This will help keep your desktop from getting cluttered, and will make it easier to organize sites according to catagory, if you choose. Just click Organize Favorites, again on the Favorites menu, to add folders and move bookmarks between folders.

Sometimes various things in software stop working. You should probably download a copy of IE and reload it to your computer. That should fix anything that's broken.

Also you can reload or fix Windows XP.
