Absolutely yes, an Email Id or email address can be sold. Spammers have been doing this for years and how they make their money. Normally it takes tens of thousands of these email addresses to make selling the address worthwhile to the seller or the buyer.

Mostly they'll have an automated email program that will create random account names with a common company tag ending (i.e. @aol.com, @yahoo.com, @hotmail,com). If the program does not receive an error message saying email could not be sent (due to no such email address exists) then the spammer has located an email address to sell or to use himself in sending unsolicited emails.

email addresses are just like regular addresses in that sense. Once you buy or sign up for something they have your address. Some companies compile a list of addresses of say...people who are interested in electronics. They pay the company a small amount for those addresses. Then when other companies want to advertise by mail or email, but specifically to target a certain group of people (like "interested in electronics") they will pay for that compilation of addresses that company has gathered. Of course the company charges more for the addresses than they paid, thus making it a "business"

they don't even need to sell it, if the data base is not protected or is hosted online then anybody can get the email ids for free(using Spyders). How do u think some of the spam mail u get goes out ??
