Firefox and Opera are much faster. The problem with Internet Explorer is that like most Windows products, it is very bloated and slower.

We tried watching a movie on Explorer last night and it would stop/start so we tried Firefox. Much quicker and a smooth picture.

Opera is supposed to be just about as fast as Firefox.

Many hackers go after Explorer because they are Windows which is the main and most obvious software to go after.

I also hear that Explorer has a higher tendency for picking up spy ware.

Try an internet search for best browsers. You might come up with something that no one has heard of. I liked K-Meleon when I tried it.

I would either go with either firefox or opera ( IE has a lot of down falls with regards to spyware / bugs ) that can easily re direct your page to dodgy sites.

Look at www.hijackthis.de and also search for a tutorial on hijackthis just as one example.

Firefox and opera are -

1 - faster browsers because they give you the browser with out all the add ons that microsoft think you need but dont really and you can download and install your own add on bits from there websites.

2. Are a more secure because they are updating them a lot more and are less likely for things like above to be installed without the users consent.

With regards to comparing opera and firefox - best to try them both out for yourself and see what you think as everyones personal opinions will differ. Hence personal preference, I could say firefox and the next poster could say opera.

Most web site designers ( if they are good ) will ensure that there website is compatable between browsers regardless.

Most users use IE because they are not computer literate and because IE comes as standard and so they just go along with it, that or they are using a work computer or laptop and IE is more inbuilt with the windows operating system and so easier to control with regards to restrictions ( although saying that firefox has got an admin template )

Not sure how well it works though.

Internet Explorer uses Active X, here is what Microsoft says about it:

"An ActiveX control can be an extremely insecure way to provide a feature...From the moment a user downloads an ActiveX control, the control may be vulnerable to attack"

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa752035.aspx

(Neither Firefox nor Opera have Active X)

United States Computer Emergency Team:

"There are a number of significant vulnerabilities in technologies related to the IE domain/zone...ActiveX (etc)...It is possible to reduce exposure to these vulnerabilities by using a different web browser"

You'll pick firefox in the end anyway and i'll get down marked for disagreeing.

I've found firefox to be extremely buggy on linux, it crashes often, especially with plugins, firefox works fine with Windows, no problems at all. IE works well with windows, is ever so slightly slower (you'd be hard pressed to tell if you have broadband) and contrary to popular belief firefox is not more secure than i.e (this is a rumour based on their popup blocker which all browsers now have). I'd rate firefox only slightly above i.e regardless of its popularity, one of the reasons firefox has become so popular is they were the first company to offer tabbed browsing (microsoft stole this idea and now use it as well).

Opera on the other hand is dfifferent, it uses up the least ammount of memory on both linux and windows systems and seems significantly faster to me, the down side is it's not quite as pretty but then in my opinion i.e is prettier than firefox so people tend not to care too much about looks.

Try to look beyond everyone recommending firefox, most of them probably havent tried i.e for a couple of years and have no idea what opera is, it's closed mindedness.

In every expierience I have had with them opera has always been faster then IE and firefox. I like Opera for the speed dial for faster access to websites and the wand for autologin then the widgets they have a large selection of widgits.
