Sure they can. You have free email tracers where you can find IP address from any received email:

http://www.ipaddresslocation.org/email-tracking/email-header.php

http://www.find-ip-address.org/email-search/find-email.php

I hope this helps!

Unlikely...but they can (if they know what they're doing) get it from your use of your e-mail client.

However, if they do *that*, they're open for Federal Hacking Charges... :D

Potentially.

They can see the ip address of the e-mail server that you used to access the e-mail, but not yours.

So for example if you use Hotmail, the person will only see an ip address from the hotmail e-mail server, but not yours.

Update: ok, then in your case they person who reads the e-mail header will only see an ip address going to one of google's gmail mail server. But it will not have your ip address in it.

This is, in fact, a very good question. People should think about security more.

Yes, but it depends what e-mail service you're using. A very few services don't publish your original IP address. The ones that don't (that I know of) are listed here: http://419.freehostia.com/?node=webmail

If you know how to get the header of an e-mail message, you can usually paste it here http://headertool.apelord.com/ and it will tell you what the original IP address is *AND* what city that IP address is. Here's an example, using the header from a message sent to me by my sister in law:
