A common trick viruses have been using the past couple years is to route your internet connection through a dummy proxy so that it looks like you've lost your connection. Safari and Internet Explorer share the same connection settings so they were tricked, but Firefox uses its own configuration and so wasn't effected.

To fix: start up Internet Explorer and go to Tools>Internet Options. Click the Connections tab, then click the "LAN Settings" button at the bottom. Uncheck all the boxes and hit "OK" and after that both programs should work fine again.

Also you should of course scan your system to clear out the infection that caused the problem to begin with.

This can happen if spyware has set windows to use a proxy server. Firefox uses a different service so the setting doesn't effect that browser.

In IE explorer go to Tools, Internet Options, Connections tab, Press the LAN setting button and uncheck use proxy server. If you can't see the Tools menu, press the Alt key to make the menu bar visible first.

You should also scan for spyware. I recommend Malwarebytes.org.
