Is it just for video chat or voice chat? Can we just use it for text chat? How does it work, I mean generally is it possible for two people to contact each other via two different messenger? for example Yahoo messenger and Live?

It's used for video chat, voice chat and text chat. So yes you can use it just for text chat. You can also have Voice chat and text chat at the same tim. You can also have different groups for chats with only certain contacts or with just one other person. I use it all the time and recommend it.

You can use it just for voice chat as well. You can only contact people between Skype accounts, as it has good voice and video features, this is why it is so popular.

It's a VoIP, video conferencing and instant messaging platform. You can make free video and voice calls to other Skype users, and to my knowledge it's only possible to talk to other Skype users or chat with your Facebook contacts (I'm not sure on that...I could be wrong).

Skype is a standalone application that can connect to various social networking applications and websites. It is used for video, voice, and text communicating.
