I have a broadband internet connection. The ISP provided a router which has DSL as input and only one CAT5 as output. I usually connect the CAT5 to my laptop and with "automatically detect settings" and the net works.
Now, i want to share this net conn with another laptop. I have a switch with 1 uplink and 4 downlinks. I tried by keeping the CAT5 from router into the uplink and used 2 CAT5's to both the laptops. When I use "automatically detect settings" it shows "limited or no connectivity" warning. I tried giving an ip address starting with 192.168.. The warning disappears but i am not able to connect to the internet.
What do i do to get internet on both the laptops?

yes you can have internet on both laptops.

here are the general steps in sharing your internet connection in two or more pcs..

•go to your router setup (which is usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 you should know what is the IP of your router)

•you will be prompted to enter username and password

if you haven't been to this router setup, just enter the default username and password

(it is provided in the router's manual)

•in the router setup, look for WAN setup or WAN port or similar

•enter or choose a port type as "POPoe" then enter your ISP username and password in the fields if there will be a connection type input then choose "continuous" otherwise continue to next step.

•look for LAN settings, there is an option to enable DHCP server, enable it! if there will be inputs on

IP - then enter your routers address

IP Subnet Mask - usually it is 255.255.255.0

if there is an IP Address Pool just leave it.

•save all your settings usually it is by "apply and reboot you router" or something alike. or if there is a separate save settings on every "settings" save it before you continue to another setup. example: if you already configured your WAN settings then there is a save button then hit it b4 going into LAN settings..

•reboot you router

•wait until connect

•check the internet status the router setting if you are connected

•just keep you two laptops detects automatic internet connections, don't give them a static LAN Ip address unless you know what you are doing.

•then your done!

note:

connect the CAT5 into the switch uplink then connect the computers the the switch's downlinks

It depends on how your ISP requires a connection be set up. Many DSL ISPs use PPPoE, which works like a dialup session, requiring a USER ID and password in order to establish the connection. If your DSL works this way, you needto go into the router's control panel to configure it to work with PPPoE, and enter the USER ID and password within the router to allow it to connect over DSL for you. You should also

a) set an administrator passwordon the router to prevent outside parties from easily accessing your home network,

b) make sure the router is set to provide addresses via DHCP to all local connections.

c) review the manual or your router (probably shipped as a PDF on the CD that came with it, in addition to the paper quick setup guide) for any additional configuration or security options.

Technically a router can cope with 255 finished connections, which contain the 4 ports for in basic terms rigidity connections which maximum routers have. to boot the reality that, the contraptions are all sharing bandwidth, so at the same time as technically attainable, it extremely is now no longer recommended to connect that many. just about a router can cope with a dozen instantaneous contraptions with realistic basic overall performance different than they're all downloading movies. additionally, distance from the router is a key ingredient.
