your computer is NATed by the cable modem, so it is not routable. If you need a routable address you need to request one from your provider (it will cost you).

First your cable modem goes out on the internet, you have an external IP adress, your computer has an local IP adress egg. 192.168.1.2 , if your cable modem act as a router you have to open ports in that router for your local computer, if it is just a modem, then you have to place outside your local firewall, the ports that you want to use to access your computer for example 21 for a ftp connection.

Sometimes some service provider block some ports just for stopping people using sharing programs, hope this is not your case, if it is, then you might need to contact the service provider to open for you the ports that you wanna use.

If it's a modem the public IP and the Pvt IP will be maped. It'll autometicly assigned. All you need to do is configuring your firewall. If u want to run a web server just allow port no 80 and if u want to accept FTP just allow TCP port 21 in your firewall. FOr more info just ask your question more specifically.

You must be going through a router. Set it up in your router to have your computer be the DMZ...this will give it unrestricted access to the Internet without the protection of the router. If you just want specific applications to work, set up port forwarding on the router for that application (check with the application's documentation to find which ports you need to forward.).

well you are going through a router.... access your router... the default is usually 192.168.0.1 and enter your username and password.... then check what the accepted ip addresses are for comptuer on that network... then go to your properties. then go to the properties of your tcp/ip and enter an ip address in the range of what it said on the properties of yoru router.... probably something like 192.168.0.110... the subnet should auto fill to like 255.255.0.0 ... it should do it for you... the default gateway should be what you typed to access your router... in this case 192.168.0.1
