One day I couldn't access Geocities sites using Internet Explorer. I tried Firefox and got similar results, both just time out trying to load the page. I didn't change any sort of settings at all, what could be the problem?

There are several variables to the issue and you would need to check it out just in case:

1) Check the security setting on of the browsers (Both IE and Firefox)

2) Do you have a software firewall present on the system (I doubt Windows XP firewall would be a variable but check to see if it is on or not)

3) Check and confirm that your Internet Connection is working for other sites (go to www.ge.com and see if you could surf) to make sure you are not working offline

4) Any spyware protection program installed

5) Direct connection to your ISP or network connection (very rare unless you configured your router/network device incorrectly)

Record all the information above on the piece of paper.

We will check to see if you are getting to geocities.com without issue by (assuming Win XP Pro or 2000)

Start --> Run

Type "cmd" (without quotes) in the Run box and click OK

in the Command Prompt, type:

nslookup www.geocities.com

You should get a result below (IP Address could be different but as long as it does pull a result, it is likely that you are working)

C:\Documents and Settings>nslookup www.geocities.com

Server:

Address:

Non-authoritative answer:

Name: geocities.com

Address: 66.218.77.68

Aliases: www.geocities.com

If you do get a result, then type:

ping 66.218.77.68

* The number will be the address showing in nslookup or type www.geocities.com *

The command should show something like below:

C:\Documents and Settings>ping geocities.com

Pinging geocities.com [66.218.77.68] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 66.218.77.68: bytes=32 time=100ms TTL=48

Reply from 66.218.77.68: bytes=32 time=96ms TTL=48

Reply from 66.218.77.68: bytes=32 time=96ms TTL=48

Reply from 66.218.77.68: bytes=32 time=104ms TTL=48

Ping statistics for 66.218.77.68:

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Minimum = 96ms, Maximum = 104ms, Average = 99ms

If you do get a reply, then you have no issue going to geocities.com utilizing ICMP packets (if you get request timed out,. it could be possible from the website or your ISP).

What I am care is that you get a nslookup and ping is a confirmation to the site. If you get no result on the nslookup, then you need check with your network or ISP

Next thing it to check that your firewall or spyware is not blocking out or blacklisting the page. Due to "malware" present on sites, spyware and firewall program by default would block geocities.com. You want to check the program(s) to insure that the website is whitelisted. Also, run a spyware scan to make sure there is no spyware/malware (and virus)

After that, check and ensure the browser's security level is not set to high (you could set it up to default)

Clear your cache or temp internet files. in IE click tools and internet options. Then click delete files. Reboot and try again. If you still can't access it then IE might be messed up. You could run a repair on IE form add/remove programs in your control panel. If still no luck then it really isn't worth using geocities anyway. I have problems accessing geocities myself.

If both IE and Firefox failed for you (The first time I've ever seen Firefox fail) then try the Opera browser. I think the interface on it is cool, only reason that I'm not a regular user is that my webpage isn't displayed correctly on that particular browser. But try it out.

Good Luck!

Sometimes Geocities closes down for maintainance. That could be one. Also,

*are you sure you don't have a virus?

*clear your cashe

*try again next time
