Question:
I have a new pc that I'm unable to access yahoo.com from.?

Whenever I attempt to acess yahoo.com (not this pc), the response that I get is 'page not found'. I can ping yahoo.com with no difficulty - so I can see the web site.

I have Zone Alarms Security Suite, including AV, FireWall and Web site filtering. I have attempted to access the site with ZA both turned off as well as turned on.

The PC is running WinXP-SP2, fully up to date on security updates. I have Sun Java installed although I don't see that as the issue because this error was happening before I installed the JAVA VM.

I have set the Internet security to 'Low-Medium" with the WinXP firewall turned off. No change.

This pc is on a network. I can access yahoo.com from numerous other pc's on the network so I don't believe it to be the router.

Its a software package, most likely zone alarm.. turning it "off" only turns off the active filters / scans... the passive ones stay in place, you would need to uninstall it or just to check try this..

Restart the machine and tap F8 until the windows advanced options menu shows..

select "safe mode with networking"

hit enter on your OS

log into windows

say "YES" to the box tellig you that your in safe mode.

open IE and see if you can surf to yahoo.com

This loads just windows no Norton, no Zone alarm.. reboot and everything will come up as normal after the test. This will tell you if its IE settings or a 3rd party software package.

If you are behind a router I am guesing that you are on a private IP (192.168.x.x) and behind NAT, as such, a 2nd firewall on top of the windows firewall is a bit much... it only adds a filter to your outbound traffic really and has a higher chance of causing you issues than it does protecting you from something.

I see this mainly with norton internet security.. but can happen with any firewall too

Try adding yahoo.com as a domain in your web filtering to an approved site.

Also, you might try and isolate this by removing the router from the mix and going in directly to your modem/DSL. If you can connect that way, you know you've got a router config issue.

You might also try and take out your current Ethernet card and replace it with one that you know works. It could be that you somehow have a MAC address being blocked.

If it's a built in Ethernet card there is always the possibility that it is corrupted. I've had that happen before and just put in a second one, shot the first one, voila' no problem.

Good Luck.

Does it come up if you type the IP address in the explorer address bar?

209.73.186.238

If it does you are experiencing a DNS issue. May need to set the nic card to use the router as a dns server on that machine.

You don't say whether it is wifi or hard wired, You could try "set up a home or small office network", or check that the network permissions are set up correctly, logged onto the correct name as in 'mshome' etc... it does sound as tho' it will be something simple... as long as you check all the connection parameter details... good luck Tom

Try it again with www. in front , if it works you probably need to clear your hosts file of invalid info. Instead of "turning off" zone alarm, use a startup manager to disable it entirely.

For this problem to be over just contact your Internet Service Provider they are to give best answer to your question. Each time it happens to my own System, the only thing I do is to contact my Internet Service Provider and they will just sort me out.

Try to lower your security setting or totally off.

Check whether your workgroup names are the same.
