Internet and copyright laws - Comcast?

I recieve a notice the other day from Comcast saying I had downloaded a copyrighted TV show (I did) -- they said I cant not download copyright material and could cancel my account -- Plus the copyright owner could take action Funny thing is TV clips are on Youtube, google, Yahoo and just about every site out there .

Problem I am having is that they suppy me with Usenet / Newsgroups with a monthly quota of 2 Gigs .. That is a lot of uncopyrighed material --which in my option is one heck of a lot of text files -- Also usenet is maybe 99.9 percent copyrighted material

How can they offer what they dont want you to download ??

The copyright laws are so sloppy -- I know illegial MP3 and movies etc are illegal to download -- But why not close down Yahoo, Google, and 99 percent of the Internet sites that contain pictures, videos, music that are copyrighted.

How can Comcast say "here are illegal files I "offer" you --but dont download them ?

The only things wrong with your otherwise excellent statement is your last sentence. Comcast is not "offering" these files to you. They are simply your ISP which owns the hardware and network. The content is put there by others (in the case of newsgroups) which is beyond Comcast's ______ (fill in the blank - couldnt find the right word to use)...'control' maybe?



Walmart sells guns. Ford sells cars. Linen n things sells knives. This is perfectly legal for them to do. However, if you use any of these items to commit an illegal act, you - not them - are in the wrong.



Lets face it. The internet is a world gone crazy with people downloading things illegally. Lets also face the fact that attorneys can cost companies millions. All it takes is for a high profile case and a letter from an attorney to comcast stating that one of their customers is bad...you get the picture.



While you can get ANYTHING in newsgroups, the simple fact that you CAN does not equal that it is ok - especially using a public medium like the internet.

If that's your first warning, it incredibly is not something to rigidity approximately. It takes some warnings till now they actually droop your service. From what you assert, my wager is which you're on an unsecured wireless connection and that somebody jumped on your wireless and downloaded a torrent record that became marked as pirated. call up Comcast and have them notate your account which you're securing your community and could be certain it would not happen returned. To the guy who suggested that Comcast can't do something, they have been incorrect, they could certainly terminate your service for violations of your words and prerequisites which needless to say state you will purely use their service for lawful applications.
