I have begun a hockey blog called Buds In Blue (budsinblue.wordpress.com) and I am looking to create a more professional e-mail to go along with it. Right now I use GMX.com for my Buds In Blue e-mail, so my current e-mail address has to end with @gmx.com.

What I am looking for is a free e-mail service provider that will allow me to have my own custom ending to it, like info@budsinblue.com.

Is there an e-mail service provider that will allow me to do that for free?

pappy is right.

You must own the domain name in order to point mail towards it.

Luckily, budsinblue.com is not registered. That means that you can! Using a registrar like godaddy.com, you can register the name for about $11/year. They usually throw in some sort of limited email account. Either one email address and a bunch of storage, or a few email addresses that all share the same limited storage. Either way, it should work just fine for you, and if you need more email accounts on that domain, it's cheap to add more.
