Don't be fooled Your IP address is pretty useless to hack into your computer or find out any more information about you. In order for them to do that they would have to know all your information already the information you have given to your service provider - without prove which would be senseless because why would they need it if you already know it. so it is a fail safe. I will not say it is impossible for someone to use your IP address but like I said that alone wont do anyone any good they need more but lets just say they do have more well then you have to think about how many computers there are world wide times how many seperate accounts are generated the chances of someone hacking into your system would be 1 in 86 billion. unless you are of national security I would doubt anyone would find your information useful enough to go through all they have to just for a peek at your account. You would have better odds winning the lottery ten times in a row then to have someone hack your computer.

the most people get are viruses off of sites they download but they are not singled out as it will give everyone who clicks on the link the same virus and spyware is easy picked up which you usully will find in sites that offer free services like ecards and such.

It really depends a lot !! . It is very possible that you service provider (the guys that give you the service to connect to the Internet) assign a dynamic IP address to you computer every time you turn on you computer or ever certain period of time, so some times is really worth nothing having an IP. Lets assume that someone gets you IP. In this case he/she can know what "ports" your computer has "open" and which operating system are you using. Ports are like services that you computer provides. For example, when you browse to get a web page, you request the page to an open port (port 80) of say, yahoo.com, the HTTP port.



It is easy to minimize the things someone can do with your IP add res using a firewall, so you basically close all "ports" on you home PC, and then it is difficult to hack some service on your PC.



If you get an IP and a port, you would eventually try to know what kind of program is attached to the port and search for vulnerabilities on the program to get some access to the computer.



Again, at home is good to have a firewall to prevent connections to your PC.



You can check Zone Alarm. They have a free firewall that tells you when someone is trying to get something out of your computer (connect to some port) or your computer is asking something from the Internet.

Lets says. a Bad Guy has your IP, a Hacker or some miscreant



Then can possibly steal your data, break in2 your computer. Install Ad-ware , Spy-ware



and install Key-loggers(software which notes every keys types and mails it back to the hacker)



So the bad guy can do lotta things if he has your IP





and say your friend of any-1 has your IP, who letz assume as a good guy. Then you can Share files .. which is called P2P (Peer-2-peer) and Play Cool Board Games via internet and lotta nice stuff





The next question is, whether you have Static IP or Dynamic IP.



Static IP is a IP, which once assigned to your Computer by your ISP will be same all the time.



Dynamic IP is one, where your IP changes everytime you LOGON to the internet



Most of the ISP's provide Dynamic IP, which has several advantages compared to STATIC IP. if your ISP provides one. You can surely OPT for Dynamic IP

To begin with, if someone has your IP address it can perform various network scans using tools like Nessus, nMap to obtain more information about your computer like what is the OS running on it, what applications are running on it....(Trust me they cbn do all this just with IP address.)
