My computer is running really slow and I have DSL.. any suggestions?

I already defraged and ran a virus check and an adware/spyware and its still running really slow... like dial up. Please help :) Thanks.

Run a speed test on you internet connection and see if it is that. If it is the connection try unplugging the power to your DSL modem for a few seconds and then plug it back in. This will reset the connection and sometimes helps.

No Virus? Defragged Disk? DSL? hmm.. why lagging :)

Do you hear lots of (disk)noise from your computer?

If you do, your computer is spending most of time swapping memory to disk. This is typical when you don't have much memory but thinking that all the anti-virus and adware can help. Any program that loads with windows eats up memory even anti-virus software.

Go to Windows Task Manager > performance tab > see the PF Usage and Physical Memory Total. If PF Usage is two times bigger than Physical Memory Total.. hmmm you many have some issues.

Tried to uninstall unnecessary softwares and reduce number of icons bottom right hand corner of your screen(Don't collect them) :)

Buy more memory(RAM)! They are most effective investment for the performance. Good Luck!

Might need some home remedies:



- Are you using a complex screensaver - it runs in the background and eats memory. I had fun with mine, then changed it to blank.

- How many programs do you load at startup? Maybe you should check it out and ensure you are running just what you need.

o To do this: cl Start, cl Settings, cl Taskbar and Start Menu.

o cl Start Menu, cl Customize, cl Remove.

o cl the icon for the program you wish to remove

o then cl Remove.

o This will prevent the program from loading at startup, but will not remove the program from the hard disk.



1. From IE, click Tools, Internet Options

- delete cookies

- delete files (offline files)

- clear history (set days to save to 0 if you want)

- click o.k., and Restart

2. click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools – run Disk Cleanup

3. Temporarily close Quick Launch:

Right-click on the Taskbar, click Toolbars, deselect Quick Launch

4. Open My Computer

right-click on C:

click Properties

click Tools, select Error Check (check all and fix), when finished click defrag & run.

5. click Start, Run ipconfig renew (type ipconfig space renew)

6. Restart. Right-click on Taskbar, click Toolbars, select Quick Launch to restore



All these things should be done regularly. The more frequently they are run, the less time they take.

- Note: Games and videos are mostly graphics. Graphics create large files. You might need more memory.

Are you hardwired to your modem or is this a wireless system? If it's wireless, it could be the wifi equipment. My wireless -g system was running at 12mps, but I found out it was a bad network adapter, the internet was fine.



Also, clear out your IE cache. Open IE, Tools menu pull down - Internet Options - then you'll see buttons marked "Delete Cookies" "Delete Files" and "Clear History" - I don't know if these actually do anything, but I always hit these buttons before doing anything else when my internet acts up. Don't worry, the "Delete Files" button DOES NOT delete your files - it just clear out internet browsing files.
