Short for Domain Name System (or Service or Server), an Internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses. Because domain names are alphabetic, they're easier to remember. The Internet however, is really based on IP addresses. Every time you use a domain name, therefore, a DNS service must translate the name into the corresponding IP address. For example, the domain name www.example.com might translate to 198.105.232.4.
The DNS system is, in fact, its own network. If one DNS server doesn't know how to translate a particular domain name, it asks another one, and so on, until the correct IP address is returned.

DNS stands for Domain Name Service/Server/System. Each computer on the internet as a unique id called an IP address. The IP address is a 12 digit number that contains all the information needed to find a computer on the internet.
However, instead of using IP addresses when searching for a website, we use more friendly domain names, like www.yahoo.com. DNS servers, located throughout the world, contain the mapping information to translate a friendly domain name to its actual IP address. Whenever you type in a URL (like www.yahoo.com) in your browser, it first goes to your local DNS server (as setup by your internet provider) to figure out the actual IP address so it can than find the web site on the internet.

As far as wireless internet goes, you should leave this to "automatic" so that it can be retrieved and set by your ISP (cox cable, embarq DSL).
Domain Name Servers are the servers that correspond the IP address of the web server and the domain name that is attached to it. It tells your computers web browser how to find the web site you're looking for. One of Google.com's IPs is 64.233.167.99
The DNS has nothing to do with any wireless internet connection, unless your work network has its own domain server. This is not all that common.

DNS Servers and Home Networking
Computers on your home network locate a DNS server through the Internet connection setup properties. Providers give their customers the public IP address(es) of primary and backup DNS servers. You can find the current IP addresses of your DNS server configuration via several methods:
* on the configuration screens of a home network router
* on the TCP/IP connection properties screens in Windows Control Panel (if configured via that method)
* from ipconfig or similar command line utility

It means the same for wired or wireless and stands for Domain Names Server. What it does is when you type in www.yahoo.com for example, well yahoo.com doesn't mean anything.
In order for your browser to find the site it needs an ip address like 192.168.1.1. Your browser goes to a DNS server that has a big list and looks for yahoo.com.
After finding it, it see what yahoo's ip address is and then your browser takes you to yahoo.com.
Without DNS you would have to know the ip for any site you wanted to go to.
