Ebay bidding Question?

I am new to Ebay and have a question about bidding. Let's say that a seller has placed an item up for auction that has an initial listing price of $5.00. If I put in my maximum bid in at $15 and no one else bids on the auction, do I end up paying the $5 or the $15? Can somebody please clear this up for me?

You only pay 5$, but the best way to bid is to wait until the auction is almost over. That way you can see if someone else has already bid and if it's something you really want you can make your max bid very high, so you can get it. But if you ever see me- heatherraemccoy- as high bidder on something you might want you better skidaddle out of there since I'm giving you good bidding advice!

You only pay the $5 plus shipping. See, when you bid on ebay you are actually setting your "Maximum Bid". If you bid $5 and someone else bids $5.50 then you lose the bid unless you bid again. If the item was up for $5 and you bid $15 you are just saying that the most you are willing to pay for that item is $15 and telling ebay to bid for you up to the price of $15. If someone else bids $5.50 then ebay will automatically raise your bid to $6. Let's say that person bids again $9, then ebay will bid for you and raise it to $9.50. Now if that person bids $20, ebay will not bid for you again because you said the most you are willing to pay is $15.

If you bid a maximum bid of $15 and no one else bids, you are only required to bid the initial price of $5. The maximum is there to ensure that no one outbids you.
