If you don't use AOL for your Internet Service Provider then you can easily drop out. If AOL is your Internet Access Provider (ISP) then many people will tell you that you are in for a hard time.



If you only use their email and AIM then contact technical support and send them a polite letter saying that you no longer wish to use their services and would like to close your account. Make sure that everyone who uses that address knows your address has changed first though.



After then just uninstall AIM and lose your link to your AOL account and forget about the entire thing. Once your account is canceled then any mail sent to it will bounce back to the sender. To be safe I would hold on to the link and password and try to email yourself at that old email address in two weeks. If the email bounces back then you know the account is closed. If the email doesn't bounce back in two days then I would log back into that account check the email there and tell AOL that you want to cancel the account, a little firmer this time. Once you stop using the account then it will go away by itself eventually, but that's AOL's problem not yours.



If you have the misfortune to have AOL as you ISP (pros call it Internet for dummies) then they are not going to want to let you go. They will keep asking you what they can do to keep you as their customer. So LIE tell them that you are getting a free ISP through your parents or something. If you try any other story they will keep hounding you. If they still hound you then tell this, "I want to quit now and your refusal to let me do it is making me so mad that I want to call the Better Business Bureau and report you." Don't threaten to talk with their boss, because they will ignore your report; AOL wants them to hound you. I have heard accounts from Computer Pros who installed AOL just to do a review for their computer show, and they had a horrible time trying to unsubscribe.



To uninstall AIM go to Start > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs > and wait a few minutes for it to load up all of the programs you have on your machine. Then select the program and click on the remove link. This should uninstall the entire program and remove it from the register as well. IF AOL gave you an uninstall program then I would use that before trying Windows uninstall routine.

First, go to start. Then go up to programs, go to aol and see if you can uninstall from there. If not, go into your control panel and go to add/remove programs. Double click and wait for program list to appear.Choose any aol related products and remove them. Restart your computer. Run a registry cleaner if you have it. If not run disk cleanup and defrag.
