First off, don't shut anything down until you've read some answers from users who seem reliable! There are several rules of which programs you can end without your computer going insane!



1. Never close a C:\Windows\System32... etc.



These are the main core of the computer, the files that are running when you start up your computer, so don't end any of those unless you get a virus, but that's a different thing to worry about.



2. If you want to keep your Anti-Virus running.



Don't end programs with Symantic, Norton, Virus-Alert, and things like that, that will end your virus program and may cause that program to crash! LiveUpdate is what those programs use to update their files, just to let you know!



3. Don't end processes with ATI or Nvidia or Graphics.



This is where your computer is getting it's video, so simply, if you end that process, there goes your video!



4. Don't end ctfmon, wuauclt, or the main svchost.



These are all vital processes for Windows, shutting them down would create a system crash.



5. Absolutely do not shut down Explorer.EXE.



This is all your icons, the start button, the task bar, everything will disappear from your view and will not come back until a system reboot.



You can close anything that doesn't look major... like msmsgs, that's MSN Messenger process, so if you aren't using that, that's a process you can end. Same with Yahoo Messenger, if you aren't using that, just end it for now! I'm not sure about Digital Persona, but whatever...



Well, I really hope I have helped you. Mainly, don't shut off things that start with Windows, or Explore or Command.com!

Internet Explorer is IExplore.exe, so that's the web browser, just for further reference!



Also, start it up in safe mode and check to see what processes run there. If you're running any extra processes in regular mode, Safe Mode shuts all the extra ones and just runs the core ones needed to run the computer.
