You can really buy it anywhere.. http://www.sedo.co.uk is one of the larger uk domain registrars. Just search a few and pick one with the best deal that suits you. Many offer free parking until you develop your site, others have different methods, low rates or free developers tools.

Just go with one that you can find some good reviews about and avoid any which have badly organised homepages as it's hardly a good advert for attention to detail and therefore business acumen if their own site is awful.

As you may know a domain name is just a name, not a real website. If you are going to create your website:

1- Buy a domain name.

2- Buy a web hosting service to provide your online space and enable you to get your website online at your purchased domain name

If you want to start your website I recommend purchase your domain and hosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some hosting services offer this gift today.

As an experienced webmaster I recommend BlueHost service which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.

They are a Multi-awarded Web Hosting which offer a Full-featured service only $6.95. You can see their Plan Details accompanied with reliable reviews regarding their service at:

I run a domain registration and web hosting company myself, and I'd be happy to help you if you're interested. :-)

Generally though, when looking for a provider for domain names, I'd suggest going by the price first (if you are going to host the site with them too make sure it is value for money and you aren't overpaying for things you don't need - i.e. a database if you have a simple site), then check the small print - some companies offer the domains really cheaply maintain ownership of them or charge a fee if you decide to move it away from them (for instance if you have problems with them).

Finally, Google on their company name and maybe the word "review" or "complaint" to get some idea of how good their service is.

One last thing to remember - you are only effectively "renting" the domain name. If you don't renew it (i.e. usually each year for .com/.net and every 2 years for .uk) then it will expire and no longer work for you, and it's quite probable that someone else will register it, preventing you having it again. You'll have a hard time getting it back unless it's a registered trademark or company name of yours.

I hear you can buy them on the internet...

EDIT: OK, seriously - and to simplify - so many places can sell you the same name simply because it's available. Each country has a body responsible for maintaining domain name registration - and all the companies you're currently looking at are doing is interacting with it on your behalf.

So, buy from whomsoever you like. Your best bet is to go for either a personal recommendation (but not hte bloke above, as that's clearly his own company) - or with one of the big-boys, who are fairly well-established. 123-reg is a good one, in the UK.

Or I can put you in touch with a firm I'd personally recommend, if you like...

The host may change your website if you do not pay him for webhosting. If you want it completely yours, you will have to pay him a small fee. Changing to a different host is quite simple. All you have to do is look for a different hosting company and say that you 'Already have a domain' and 'Transfer files from a different location'. That's it. Make sure you pay for your hosting and the company's Terms do not allow them to change any of your hosted files.
