I have a fast wireless broadband service. But the speed is more like the old type of internet.. The wireless box we have is about 25m away from the main telephone point. Could this be the problem ? Or are there other reasons ? thanks

wifi is not as fast as cat5 cable, best in your home to use cat5 cable

look at the bottom of this spill:

another thing to slow you down is spyware. run clean up programs regularly.

Set up Home network

===============

If you cannot find these locations search for them in windows help files

Click start >help and support.

Wire in all computers and network printer to the router using cat 5 cable from their Ethernet ports. Cat 5 is faster than wifi. Use blue or white cat 5 leads, do not use any leads that have red on them.

If you buy your router from your ISP there is a good chance they will set it up for you. Check your ISP website for contact number.

Your ISP has to connect the router to the internet.

Then on each computer:

1. Open My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View Tab >tick “use simple file sharing”

2. In My computer Right click the Hard Drive that you want to share >sharing and search > tick share the folder in network

3. On desktop screen select the my computer icon and right click the icon >properties >computer name tab > Change> bullet workgroup and type in WORKGROUP

4. In control panel category view >network and internet connections

a. select network connections > Find the LAN connection Icon >right click >enable

b. Find the Windows Firewall pop up (located in the LAN icon properties) >bullet Off ( disable any other firewall programs)

c. Find the LAN connection icon >right click >repair

d. In LAN connection properties pop up > Tick the four items in the main window > in properties screen for Internet Protocol >general tab >bullet two auto instructions

5. Using Explorer, expand My Network Places in the directory tree >select Workgroup > click on workgroup and what you can see in the results. This is your home network., you should see each computer that is in the Workgroup domain.

6. You can plug a network printer in the router and load the network printer drivers into each computer and each computer can access the same printer.

7. If you have a sensitive part of a computer that you do not want to share on the network, right click and un tick the sharing.. This can be the Hard drive, partition, folder or file.

8. You do not have to have sharing enabled on your computer to see others, you need sharing on Your computer enabled so others can see you.

9. After all computers are turned on and running, enable the firewall program you use on each computer.

10. Each computer will require their own antivirus and internet security programs.

11. Using the internet browser access the router (see router instructions) by typing in the IP address in the browser go bar.

12. Enable the routers wifi

13. on computers that You want to access the router’s wifi, boot up and run their wifi wizard to find the router

14. If you want to network the wifi computer you have to do the same from step 1 above to it.

Setting up a wireless network

From my notes

Also while your computer is in good nick you should download and install Superantispyware and Spybot –Search and Destroy because when malware gets going you will not be able to access the net.

Clean Up Computer

Superantispyware

===============

http://www.superantispyware.com

Has a stop homepage from being altered which is good

Can reset windows defaults in various parts

Download and run superantispyware. I was put onto this program because of an annoying popup (XP or Vista plus all OS preceding)

Install it and set the preferences to monitor your home page.

Set up tick boxes that you want in the other tabs as you require.

You don’t need to run it at startup unless you want the antispyware protection 24/7.

Note Superantispyware has powerful reset tools that will set stuff back to windows defaults.

To use these tools click preferences >repairs. This may be handy to reset IE URLS if you have annoying pop ups.

Superantispyware is a good program and remember to update it before scanning. A scan may take 45mins. Just run a scan for the first attack.

Spybot – Search and Destroy

=====================

Download spybot search and destroy. Through its immunize page and link to javacools spyblaster, spybot can manage activex problems which is extremely difficult for antispyware programs to find. Also just run the scan for first attack.

http://www.spybot.info/en/download/index.html

.

Windows Live Onecare

===================

Onecare safety scan fixes registry and finds temp files that nothing else seems to find.

Choose the Beta Edition link for vista users.

It does registry, spyware , virus , disk clean up and defrag

XP Users http://onecare.live.com/site/en-ca/defau...

Vista Users

http://onecare.live.com/site/en-ca/center/whatsnew.htm

Run the full safety scanner, it takes a few seconds to install the scanning files but when you start the scan, it takes 2 hours or more. Let it load the scanning tools, then start the Safety Scan. So once it starts to load the safety scans' x file of x , you can leave the computer and go to bed etc.

Then at the end of the scan it asks you to set it running full time.

Think twice about setting it to run in the background as it could be another thing to slow you down. However, it may be worth while if you have no other security programs running.

Consider the following options:

I personally run Norton 360 which is full internet security and run superantispyware when I want to.

So if you don’t have a decent internet security program then perhaps run the superantispyware with your antivirus in the background.

If you sick of antivirus programs that don’t work perhaps run onecare full time and run superantispyware whenever.

Now you should be flying and Onecare has even set up a new system restore point for you.

Note onecare does other stuff as well. Click on the menus on the LHS column., but all of this is done if you click Safety Scan.

add onecare to your favourites

IE7

Over time IE7 seems to set its own (or programs do) tick boxes in the advance tab.

In IE7 Tools >Internet Options >Advance Tab

Click Restore advance settings defaults

Tick empty temp files when browser closes (this empties the cache, which if not empty, will stop you from going online).

Bullet disable phishing filter

Delete Browser History, cookies, add ons the whole lot regularly.

Close the browser to set the settings.

NOTE: 2008 will be the year of add on malware and spyware. I advise NOT to install active x when asked to on unknown websites. If you allow an active x install and it contains adware or such, no antivirus or anti-spyware will find it, because you have given permission to install it. The cleanup programs think that you want it installed. It will be very difficult to remove.

Phishing Filter

When first released, phishing filter slowed IE7. Apparently, Microsoft has fixed this through the windows updates. If you like you could try to run it - bullet the enable.

Only run one phishing filter program, and only run one firewall program.

.

Fixing Your Computer

Run the scans of the three programs above. If your computer is still faulty then you have to go deeper with the features mentioned.

If you are seeing 400-700kbps, your computer is getting 400-700kbps not 3mbps. You mean you dad is paying for 3mbps? There is a big difference between download and upload speed. All the hardware at your ISP is maximizing speed down not speed up. There are lots of variables involved and you need to remove some of them. Your PC needs to be plugged into the internet modem port directly when you do the test. For higher speeds you would also need to check your settings on your PC's network card but since it can't be set for less than 10mbps you are probably OK. Lots of factors can affect your Internet speed. Your ISP's equipment, the type of connection Cable or DSL. DSL is 10mbps max and the farther you are far away from the telephone company it drops the speed. Cable max is about 50mbps but they make you pay more for different levels of service. Where I live 6mbps is std and its $15/mo more for 20mbps and $25 for 30mbps etc. Then your modem (the box that talks to the ISP) for faster speeds over 15mbps you need a DOCSIS 3.0 compliant modem. If your modem is more than about 3 years old you should discuss with your ISP. Of course it is not necessary with DSL or your dismal connection speed. Next is your router and its settings. If its within a few years old its ports are 10/100mbps meaning it can switch from 10mbps to 100mbps automatically. Your wireless setting is configurable and defaults to MIXED MODE meaning both "B" (10mbps) devices can connect as well as "G" (54mbps) devices and if its really new "N" (100mbps) devices can connect. This MIXED MODE will run your connection at 10mbps cuz that is the slowest device on the network. Simply changing the setting to G only will cause it to run up to 5x faster, assuming you have no B devices. Most B devices are old. Examples of B devices would be a 486 PC with a wireless card or a barcode reader. The newest laptops or PCs might be N or a bluray player. Not allot of N devices cuz most internet doesn't run faster than G. Remember B=10, G=54, N=100. You might get close to 100mbps at a University campus or government building. I am paying for 20mbps and see about 16-17mbps download and about 2mbps upload. You need at least 1mbps is stream HD movies to a TV. In summary your Dad is right and your connection sucks if its really 400-700kbps. But it may not be the ISP it could be your modem, router or your PC. Check it right at the modem. 3mbps sucks too but it may be all you can get if you live way out in the country. Find out what you pay from your Dad and shop around. Ask what company your friends have and what they see on speed test. Look at their modem and router and compare it to yours. Be part of the solution and not part of the problem.

The 25m shouldn't cause a problem, but it might help to move it closer and/or swap out any wires just to eliminate them as the cause of the problem. Try connecting directly to the internet (without the wireless) to see if it's quicker. If so, you've narrowed the problem to the wireless gear. Try a plug-in transceiver (borrow one if possible) to see if the problem is in your wireless card or antenna. Hope this helps...

Download "Speed Meter Pro" it's free and will give you details on your connection, as well as your host's connection and how the speeds compare.

You could also have other users on your connection as well. Check your network for unauthorized users.

you can download this thing from google that tries to make your internet faster or you could get iex7 pro or get mozilla firefox. you could also get a better internet connection line. i would just buy a router and get a new cable modem.

If you have DSL, it slows down as more people get on it at a time.
