I'm a puppet character on Avenue Q and I love to surf porn on the internet! But on a serious note, how has the internet been for you? Helpful or harmful? In what ways?

Check out Avenue Q, the puppet musical showing on Esplanade, Singapore from 30 October! http://www.avenueq.sg/

Well, if the question is in the context of my life (me, myself and I), then certainly it is more helpful than harmful. It is in fact a part of my life, and possibly the same for all (Ok, 99%) of the Gen Y in the world. We grew up in an era whereby technology advances so fast that most people stopped their attempt to track the changes (except the extreme nerds who may be your professors).

Let me elaborate on how it improved my life. The internet allows me to access the world with my magic fingers; get updated with the latest news, steal or adapt great ideas from unknown geniuses from unknown places (the nicer word is "borrowing" but who cares), buy branded goods not available locally, bank online, keep in touch with buddies through msn/yahoo, expand my social circle while maintaining contact with current friends through facebook, fry my brain competing in real-time online games with overseas mates, try to get freebies from online promotions and contests (such as party rights with Avenue Q?), download (paid) music, watch (free) funny video clips online, blah, blah... The list is too long. Did I forget to mention about stealing a few minutes break at work to check my yahoo mails on my ebay purchases? ;) We only have 24 hours a day and a lot need to be done within this limit.

Sure, the internet has its evil. Some kids get to learn the making of bombs through some obscure online sites and went around venting their teenage angst. Some Japanese depressed souls gather for group-suicide through the help of a sick forum. It also allows people who hate you to send you viruses in an attempt to screw your life (etc, etc). Then again, these people must be quite messed up in the first place? Why blame the internet? There is certainly more than one way to harm people, kill yourself and seek revenge, even without the help of the e-connection. The internet may be part of my life, but it is not all of my life. I have friends and family who help me maintain sanity and I don't think I offended anyone that badly to send me a virus intentionally. The internet is a tool, we humans make the decision on how to utilise it.

Now, can I party with ya after the long explanation? ;P

Internet is more Helpful to me now as i work overseas because it helps me communicate with my 3 year old daughter which is in Philippines with my parents everyday after work.. i just go online and have a chat with her.. and that is the best time of my Long day!

Harmful.. in a way when people try to destroy and the quick way is through INTERNET..in a split of the second you can be popular.

You ask a very pertinent question and it is very subjective.

Many times individual taste and choice predetermine what he or she wants to search in the internet.

So there is no right or wrong answer and to one who thinks it is harmful, another believes it is helpful. However in general, any informative educational materials are normally helpful .

Just as they declassified ratings in Singapore to allow adult shows the authorities do not allow Playboy magazine to be sold.

I think the internet has been both; helpful and harmful--

Helpful--

Information, emails, quicker responses/ access to specific data, etc.

Harmful--

Sometimes I get carried away and stay on for hours-- either in research, chatting, or games

Harmful in health; as in if I stay on too long I get headaches.

With too much information available, quality diminishes; I just cursor over important facts and I don't think critically about matters. I have just too much going on around me.

Takes away time for things you need to do; as in quality time/ exercise; but that's different for every individual

Both helpful and harmful.

Helpful:we can get information we want fro.m the Internet.

we can communicate easily

Harmful:if we keep searching and play the games on the Net,we are wasting our precious time

It also will harm our eyes causing them to be extremely tired.

Hey Trekkie Monster and Cast!!

I had a long chat with my friend before typing this answer.. lol to sum it up..

She Said:

bad - it makes u sit there and be fat

good - it has alot of info on how to lose weight by sitting there

I Said:

good - one of the great invention in the world especially in this information age

bad - it don't makes you fat! lazy people who uses the internet are already fat.. :x

Of course internet has been more helpful to me, i'm away from home due to my national service and when i come back, i'm sure to find all the world news and events on sites such as yahoo and wikipedia.

I also enjoy watching all the videos in the world of latest shows, series, videos(i even chanced upon a video of you guys singing the Avenue Q theme song) etc and often keep in contact with my friends through emails and chat programs.. So its definitely been more good then harm!! : )

Anyway we both already got tickets to Avenue Q and are really excited to catch it finally!!

See you guys on stage! (off stage if we're lucky)

Definitely HELPFUL!

It’s like "PORN-ON-DEMAND". You won't have to go find your favorite video when u can’t remember where you hide it. Or have than awkward moment over the counter's old lady in video store. Imagine 24/7, non-stop action!

Seriously, we can gain a lot online.

1. DISCOVER: how big stuff can be, how long people can last, the meat variety available in all shapes, size & color, cultural difference & worst of all how ugly pubes can be... yucks

2. LEARN: New positions, kinky ideas, wonderful techniques that make my mate hug me like a Superhero when I make her world SHAKE.

3. NETWORK: Keeping in touch [non-physical] with friends & “maybe” friends, adult friend-finder, steamy chat-rooms, instant messaging, provide real-time communication & bring people together.

Unfortunately, its also harmful when,

1. YOU TRY TO IMITATE, You could hurt, real bad… such as burns, sores and even pull a muscle. They are trained professional with lotsa lubes, so PLEASE do not try them at home.

2. YOU LOSS YOUR LIFE IN THE VIRTUAL WORLD, look at those lifeless kids/adults trap in Warcraft? It’s like a drug. Thank god, my mum, neighbors & sometimes the police give me a reality check by knocking on my door if they hear Moanalisa in action...

Other than LOGGING ON TO GET OFF,

Let the others can tell u what else they can do. [like the boring stuff, zzz]

PS: Trekkie, I would love to meet you in person to exchange some good links & pointers or something. I’m straight or a dominant top when desperate time calls for desperate measures. hahaha

Like everything on planet earth there are both good and bad that come with it. Yin and Yang.

The internet when use correctly give you all the information you want and need, you can even make a couple of dollars if you use it correctly.

On the flip side I have seen marriages fallen apart because of Maple Story (the wife was playing it close to 20 hrs a day only stopping to get instant noodles, the toilet and sleep)

So in conclusion its how u use the net. Nothing is solely harmful or helpful. Look at common drugs - made to help us but if abuse it has the same effect.

To me, a mother of 3 kid of 9yrs old to 14yrs old, the answer should neutral. Why!

Firstly at work I need internet. As a Purchaser, we need to access to internet to source for materials, look through our email hourly, even issuing of our Purchase Order also need internet (Data entry is link to our Hong Kong HQ). You can say that internet is a must for my work schedule. And it is more helpful than harm. Furthermore, booking of badminton courts can be book using internet! Checking of Best buffet in Singapore (which is cheap and good) can also be obtain through internet. Even checking of best discounts for sales can be obtain through internet.

But

Internet can be quite harmful but on the other hand it can be helpful to my children of young age. As you can see everything can get access to any web page by registering. You can just access to any web (be it from cartoon web or porn web). Nowadays, schools also encourage students to use internet to do their homework. My three children was given "Internet Homework" during the school holiday. They were even instructed to get some 'materials' to finish their project. Actually to do school work through internet is kind of help my children reduce carrying school books load and also save money.... as we need not buy so many books for our children to carry to and fro school.

Therefore the answer I can give is NEUTRAL.

Looks like I got mixed feeling for the present internet thing. Headache!
