Why does my PC connect to the internet at startup without me wanting it to and how can I stop it? It started doing it after my latest Windows Automatic Update a week ago. I'm on XP using Norton System Works 2006. I want manual control of what it does but it has other ideas!!!

Hi, is it dial up or broadband. Broadband is designed specifically for a permanent connection. Dial up can be configured to connect when a web application opens. First thing to check is your startup folder. Open start menu>programs>startup and if there are any applications there will start on booting up. Web applications will start your internet connection. Then check internet options from Control Panel. Click on the connections page at the top. There should be options to:

Always connect.

Only connect when there isn't a network connection (For broadband users)

And Never connect.

If you choose the last option you will have manual control of the connection.

When booting the PC up simply unplug the netowrk or phone wire it will throw an error and you can tell it to quit connecting automatically. If you want to hear my conspiracy theory about Microsoft here it goes: Microsoft purposely screws its code up every now and again so it can put out a "fix" for a price. IT is just another genious way to screw the Average Joe out of an extra $20 bucks. But this adds up for Microsoft. Anyways goto Start -> Control Panel. Click on the Network Connections icon. Click on your Connection's icon (dial-up or LAN or Wireless). A window will display showing basic information about your connection, also yo have the option of diabling the connection. Good luck.

If you are a LAN user or a broadband user, this is normal. But if you dont want it to be going online on startup, disable the connection before shutting down your PC and then enable it when you wanna use it!

Check "START" > "All Programs" > "Startup". If there is nothing there that links to the connecting of your internet, then download either "StartRight" or "WinPatrol" (I use both) from PCWorld.

StartRight will allow you to stop unwanted processes as well as re-order them!!! Isn't this cool?!

WinPatrol will also allow you to stop unwanted start-up processes as well as warn you of any other applications (that you've installed) that may try to install itself as a start-up application.

A lot of good answers... but have you checked that your mail program isn't configured to retrieve mail at start-up?

Adjust your network settings.
