Get Firefox - its architecture is designed with that kind of crap in mind: You will never see an unwanted popup again if you use Firefox.

http://www.mozilla.org

adware and spybot search and destroy are good for removing the problem when it happens but it shouldnt happen in the first place: GET FIREFOX. I cant stress that enough.

good luck.

Use Ad-Aware and CCleaner to scrub your computer files.

And I can only re-emphasise what has already been said... get Firefox 2.0.0.6.

And beef up your firewall software. I.E. is like a leaky bucket when it comes to security.

It's your choice. Firefox is very easy to use and it carries over your IE favourites... you can block ads at the click of a button.

My Mum and Sister tell me they are fed up with all of the security updates they must download for Internet Explorer. I'm trying to convince them top go Firefox. I use it on 3 PCs and 1 Mac.

I don't get pop-ups any more ...

If you get more than 3 pop ups per day with the browser pop up blocker enabled, you are infected with malware. If you follow all the following steps it should get rid of your problem and prevent future problems. All programs listed are free.

If you do not have active virus protection, install only one. All are excellent.

Try AVG first.

Update your spyware protection and run a full scan.

If you do not have active spyware protection, install

Windows Defender

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

---------------------------------------------------------

Install the following four programs and run weekly or at least monthly. You need all four. They are not a substitute for full time spyware and virus protection. They will greatly increase your protection. Install and run now.

Ad-Aware SE Personal (update + full scan)

Spybot Search & Destroy (update + immunize + scan)

--------------------------------

Note if a scan detects a problem but is unable to remove, start the computer in safe mode with the internet line disconnected and run a full scan.

In severe cases your system restore files will also be infected. In these cases you will need to turn off system restore to prevent malware hiding in the system restore files and reinfecting the computer during removal or during a future system restore. Turning off system restore deletes the system restore files.

Right click on "my computer"> Properties > System Restore Tab > Check box turn of system restore

After the malware is removed turn on system restore.

Get "CCleaner". It's free and will clean your system to a high standard. Also, check what pages are triggering to spyware to begin. It's a slow process but you can figure it out. Also, when it does happen hit CTRL/ALT/DELETE and check on your running procceses. If you see something you're unsure of or don't understand. Go to "GOOGLE" and type in the name of the process letter for letter and there are a few web sites that can give you an eye-opener as to what is going on. Hope it helps
