Hello,

I have a very ancient (5 year old) Speedstream 5100 SBC DSL modem connected to my computer. The main cable is connected to the wall. Just yesterday I came home from school and noticed the DSL light was flashing red. This means to me that I wont be able to get on the internet. I checked all the wires and they were in place, I even unplugged the modem's power and waited a good 3 minutes before plugging everything back in. Nothing worked. I called my internet service provider, ATT, and spoke to someone for like, 2 hours. They ran 5 or 6 tests to see if anything was wrong where I was, like if the lines were functioning. They made me reset the modem, try to activate it again, take the modem to another room with a phone jack and plug it in there, and that test failed too. The DSL light was still flashing red. The power light is green, ethernet light is green, DSL light blinking red, internet light off, and activity light blinking green. What could be the problem with my modem? Do I need to buy a new one?

please help! I'm a college student and need the internet! I'm actually at my institution working on their computers. (R.N. Registered Nursing Major).

thanks a bunch,

Do you have service?

=

You can call DSL Customer Care at 1-877-937-5288 (1-877-XDSLATT) to report your service outage

-

ATT can tell you IF your DSL modem is bad, IF the line is bad, IF your service has been disconnected.

This happened to me twice, once at two different addresses. The first time was when my first DSL was set up over 12 years ago when DSL was relatively new. I was within the maximum distance but Pacific Bell had to install some special "bridge" or something to fix a physical wireing issue on their end. The second instance was just two years ago - my DSL was getting slower and slower plus I was starting to get dropped connections. Turns out that my DSL was on a very old copper trunk line and SBC was in the process of upgrading people to fiber backed connections. They switched me over to the new fiber backed connection and my DSL has been very fast and reliable. I did have to get a new DSL modem to use the new service - the claim was that my old modem couldn't handle the speed the new service could provide. The new modem was free, so no big deal. Have you checked all your phone lines to make sure the phone filters are still in place? Has the phone company sent out a tech to check the line connectivity from your house end?

you might have to buy a new network card "PCI card" mine did the same thing like 4 yrs ago and i had to replace the network card Better known as PCI CARD thats where the ethernet cord goes to your tower from the modem that make the dsl light go on look at the back of your tower where the ethernet cord goes to and if the light is not on when connected you do need a network card "PCI Card "

can buy it on best buy
