My computer cannot connect to the internet, but only in a few applications. I can get ont he internet through my web browser (hence typing this here) but some others, including steam and iTunes, seem to think I am not connected to the internet. I would assume it was just the settings on one of these programmes but the fact that more than one have spontaneously spacked out at the same time makes me wonder if it's a system setting. Any ideas?
Anything would be more useful than iTunes. It's solution to a network connectivity problem is to try to send me to iTunes help online! Idiots.

Checked the firewall, it's allowing all the programmes. I even totally disabled it for a moment to check, it's still good. Any ideas? I'm using windows 7 with windows security essentials

There's a good variety of things that could be blocking this.

Some of the things I would check:

1) Perhaps you installed an application or an application you have was updated and is using ports that are required for steam or itunes. You can google what ports are needed.

Steam Ports: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8571-GLVN-8711

I would uninstall any recent application installs and see if that enables it again.

2) If you are using a router that is shared, perhaps someone logged into it and disabled a specific range of ports from your computer. (IE, the router denies certain things.)

3) You could have a virus or similar effecting how these applications work.

It might be easier to determine the issue if you tell us what your internet connection is, who its through and if its through a router, etc.

Restore your computer to an earlier time when you didn't have this problem.
