I wasn't having any problems till about 6 months ago. Now periodically I will loose my internet and since my phone goes through my internet I will loose that also.

If I am on the phone when it happens I can hear the person say hello? hello? but they can not hear me.

I have Vista and if I look at the connection icon it sometimes says I am still connected but I can not surf so I know I am not and then I try the repair option it says it is a DNS server config issue to contact my provider but they have been out 3x and say they do not see a problem.

The strange thing is the lights on the modem are all up and working when this happens and this morning I was on the phone and it went out but I could still surf. I thought it may have been a windows update that I needed or something and there are 4 that wont install:
Comilative Update for media center KB982480
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET framework 3.5 family update KB951847
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 windows Vista SP1 and windows Server 2008 security Update KB979913
Security Update for .NET Framework 3.5 on windows Vista SP1 and Server 2008 x86 KB983587

Any suggestions on what is causing this and how I can fix it?

Edit: Didn't see where you said they were out 3 times. You may have a bad cable or network card. I'd try to replace those. Especially the cable going from the modem to your router. Still think its bad wiring somewhere because it affects your PC and the phone.

------------

Sounds like bad wiring. Call your internet service provider and ask them to do a line test, they will check the signal from their office to your cable/dsl modem and check the signal quality. Try to contact your local office for the best support. If they say it is good you can try to reset your equipment by unplugging the modem, router, and PC and leaving them off for about 2 minutes then plug it back in. If you are still getting connection errors then contact your internet service provider again and have them send a technician out to your residence to do the line check. They will hook a meter up to the lines to check them and can visually inspect the connectors for corrosion.

its prolly your phone line, try a different pc or borrow a friend's laptop and see how that goes

if it does work on them then its most likely to be your phone line

give your isp a call and have them take a look at it

that way you wont have to anything (thats what i do)

you could try diagnosing your modem and/or router

or try looking though your phone lines for any probems like grounded wires or rust

rusty wires or terminals often cause your internet and sometimes your phone to get cut (lose dial tone)

sometimes it causes your phone to get very loud static (idk if you have this problem too)

based on my experience

or, as I said earlier, call your isp

I mean you do pay for customer support in your monthly bill

or sometimes its free, depending on the provider

you've got a project which includes your community card. attempt suitable the following ! bypass to commence-administration panel-networks&blablabla- suitable click on interior of reach section connection - houses - configure (on the desirable element of the window) - greater . attempt to discover some thing like link %,duplex some thing ... in case you click it it is going to say contained in the right section "automobile negotiation" (or some thing similar; be conscious that texts variety from variety to variety) ... once you've stumbled on that set it on 10Mbps finished mode and then ok,ok ... . this manner you'll regulate the capacity of your community card ... If the priority is solved you need to judge finding out to purchase a clean community card on your cutting-edge one is getting weak and it would want to stop operating ... Cheers !

Are you using a router? I had a similar problem which turned out to be my router. Whenever I used the WAP security it would keep kicking me off.
