Since installing bt toal broadband with the home hub thing, the service has been crap. Its a lot slower than ever, the internet freezes, I am constantly having to wait minutes instead of seconds for a new link to appear, its driving us nuts.

My husband wants to re-boot the computer to factory setings, but Im not sure about this. We will put anything like photos etc onto disc, but Im just worried if we re-boot it, something will go wrong.

Anyone got any ideas to make it run better? Or do I have to sit on the phone for 3 hours with an incompetant twit at bt who doesnt actually manage to sort things? (ive had plenty of bad experience with call centres and the capability of staff, so Im not really looking forward to ringing them!

Anyone on here got any bright ideas?

Many thanks

If you google 'bandwidth tester' you'll find links to sites that can test the actual capacity of your phone line... older lines are generally slower no matter what equipment you plug in to them there's not much you can do about it. Also download something like tuneup utilities www.tune-up.com which has a feature to optimise your connections and is free for 30 day trial

Last resort is to reinstall your operating system

First thing run a speedtest

http://www.speedtest.net/

or the second one has a good explanation page

http://www.pcpitstop.com/internet/Bandwidth.asp

see that you are getting around about the speed you are paying for.

Next check your home hub go onto the home hub admin page and that will display what speed you are connecting at.

You get at the admin page by typing in something like http://192.168.181.1 (the numbers are different depending on the make of your hub)

If there is a big difference between these two then you need to go further

If the hub download connection speed is low then switch the hub off switch it back on after at least 30 sec have passed. recheck the connection speed and if it is still low talk to BT

Hi there,

I don't think that it will make a difference whether you have re-installed your operating system or not. I have the Home Hub and all depending where you are , you may get a slow service.

It also depends on the time of day, so say Friday evening is slow because everyone has finished work, etc.

Check out this; http://www.speedtest.net/ to see your net speed.

If you have just signed up to BT, then expect it to be slow for a few days because they are configuring your line with the fastest speed.

If you installed the software from the disc uninstall it. It causes many problems and is not needed. Use the web based configuration tool if you need access to the router. You are talking about a re-install, not a re-boot, Avoid this. Try the machine plugged into the router with the lan cable supplied, see if this is better, this proves whether the wireless is the problem. If so re-position the router as high as possible and clear of any obstructions.

This is a tough question to answer - since alot depends on your particular broadband service, what equipment you are using, the age of your PC...

Based off your description - it sounds like you had fast broadband internet service, and then either switched, or just added a new home router.

At first blush - I'd say the router could be either configured incorrectly, or bad. I had a bad router at home that used to do many similar "tricks" that you described - eliminating it helped.

Unfortunately - it sounds like your ISP provided your router, so your only real recourse is to deal with them! Reformatting your PC and re-installing you OS might be a bit extreme - I doubt it would really help much.

I suggest - pour yourself a relaxing drink of whatever, mentally prepare yourself for disappointment - and call your Internet Service Provider for assistance. Who knows - you may get a decent tech rep and luck out!

Good luck!

the reason it is running slow is because of the underground tubes ok imgine a motorway there is 3 lanes going across there is 20 cars there get jammed as there is not enough lanes the same thing is happening with your interner BT is renounded for it. you should have a local BT office that can help and they will speak english and help you go to www.btlocalbusiness.co.uk or .com and search for your local office they should help you good luck. the other thing it could be is its not installed properly so try inistalling and then reinstalling x also you could try searching the bandwidth you might only be on 2 meg recentltly you can have 8 meg for no extra cost ask them about that as well if you call

To put it simply, you have to time it so that either the US or China are in bed before you can start using the internet. Its basically down to broadband width according to what I've read but you'd think in this day and age there'd be some way round it. Oh well all as I can say is keep trying and maybe after 4hrs something will happen!

Get rid of the home hub thing, and just plug the modem in to the back of your computer.

I keep getting junk 'phone calls from someone "on behalf" of BT offering a free upgrade. I tell them the shove it. If it aint broke, don't fix it.

I have BT total Broadband but use the modem not the home hub. Did'nt fancy changing to it, "If a thing is working ok why change". Mine is fine, touch wood.

Try turning the hub completely off at the wall and leave it for five mins. Reboot the computer and hub and see if this makes a difference.
